Matthew & Hansen Win Swedish Open Titles

9 Feb 2009

England's Nick Matthew and Dane Line Hansen celebrated contrasting title triumphs in the Swedish Open Squash Championships at the Sporthallen in Linköping, Sweden.

The climax of the men's Case Swedish Open, a $60,000 PSA Tour 5-star event, saw both Matthew and top seed Karim Darwish marking their 25th appearances in a PSA Tour final.

But the celebrations were short-lived for the Egyptian favourite when Darwish was forced to concede the match after sustaining an ankle injury in his semi-final victory over teenage compatriot Mohamed El Shorbagy.

The outcome in his second successive Tour final of the year marked third seed Matthew's eighth career title - but no doubt the easiest of all!

Sixth seed Victoria Lust was hoping to make it an English double in the final of the women's Zack Swedish Open, a $6,000 WISPA World Tour championship.

The 19-year-old from Bedfordshire upset top seed Annelize Naude en-route to reaching her third successive Tour final since December.

But second seed Line Hansen was too strong for the English teenager, winning 11-8, 11-6, 11-8 in just 23 minutes to capture the sixth Tour title of her career - but the first in Scandinavia.

Men's final:
[3] Nick Matthew (ENG) bt [1] Karim Darwish (EGY) w/o

Women's final:
[2] Line Hansen (DEN) bt [6] Victoria Lust (ENG) 11-8, 11-6, 11-8 (23m)
