7 Feb 2009

Fast-rising Egyptian teenager Mohamed El Shorbagy claimed an impressive upset in the quarter-finals of the Case Swedish Open when he defeated Pakistan's fourth seed Aamir Atlas Khan to reach the semi-finals of the men's $60,000 PSA Tour 5-star squash event at the Sporthallen in Linköping, Sweden.

It was a battle between two 18-year-old future stars of the game - but it was the less experienced youngster from Alexandria that prevailed, winning 11-6, 11-5, 11-6.

El Shorbagy, the world junior champion, will now face compatriot Karim Darwish, the world number one. After surviving a close game against unseeded Davide Bianchetti, top seed Darwish cruised to a 12-10, 11-2, 11-1 win over the Italian to set up the all-Egyptian semi.

The other men's semi-final will be an all-English affair between national and Yorkshire county team-mates Nick Matthew and James Willstrop. Matthew, the third seed from Sheffield, beat sixth-seeded Egyptian Omar Mosaad 11-5, 11-6, 11-9, while Willstrop, the No2 seed from Leeds, defeated fellow countryman Joey Barrington 11-9, 13-11, 11-7.

There was a notable upset in the women's Zack Swedish Open when England's sixth seed Victoria Lust battled to a five-game win over the event favourite Annelize Naude to reach the last four of the $6,000 WISPA World Tour championship.

Lust twice stemmed fight backs by her Dutch opponent to win 12-10, 9-11, 11-8, 9-11, 11-8. The 19-year-old from Bedfordshire will now take on Olga Ertlova, the No8 seed from the Czech Republic, for a place in the final.
