Pakistanis Punished As Bianchetti & Barrington Succeed In Sweden

Pakistan seeds Mansoor Zaman and Farhan Mehboob crashed out of the Case Swedish Open after significant upsets on the opening day of action in the men's $60,000 PSA Tour 5-star squash event at the Sporthallen in Linköping, Sweden.

Unseeded Englishman Joey Barrington, ranked 30 in the world, despatched world No21 Farhan Mehboob 11-6, 11-9, 11-3 to set up a surprise quarter-final meeting with fellow countryman James Willstrop.

Defending champion Willstrop removed Swedish wildcard opponent Badr Abdel Aziz 11-7, 11-9, 11-7.

Mansoor Zaman, the No7 seed from Peshawar, took the first game against Davide Bianchetti - but the unseeded Italian fought back to upset the higher-ranked left-hander 6-11, 13-11, 11-7, 11-2.

Bianchetti will now face Karim Darwish, the 2004 champion from Egypt. The in-form Darwish, who now heads the Dunlop PSA World Rankings, also dropped the first game in his first round match against Simon Rosner, but recovered to beat the German qualifier 8-11, 11-8, 11-6, 11-7.

Swedish interest in the women's Zack Swedish Open was boosted when Anna Detter beat Eliza Kargioti 11-5, 11-6, 11-7 in the qualifying finals of the $6,000 WISPA World Tour championship. The 22-year-old from Stockholm will face Deon Saffery, the third seed from Wales, in the first round.
