Temple Takes Out Zaman In Islamabad Upset

2 Apr 2008

Unseeded Englishman Robbie Temple produced a sensational upset in today's first round of the COAS International when he defeated the hosts' leading hope Mansoor Zaman, the No3 seed, in the $25,000 PSA Tour squash event at the Mushaf Squash Complex in the Pakistan capital Islamabad.

Temple, the world No97 from Gloucester, was taken to tie-breaks in the first two games of the match against local hero Zaman, the former world No11 now ranked 30 in the world. But the London-based 21-year-old survived both games - and went on to take the third to record an 11-10 (2-0), 11-10 (2-0), 11-6 victory in 28 minutes.

After scoring the biggest scalp of his career, Temple now faces another Pakistani for a place in the semi-finals: sixth seed Farhan Mehboob, also from Peshawar, beat compatriot Aqib Hanif, a qualifier, 11-4, 11-7, 11-4.

The event's top two seeds safely negotiated the first round - Malaysian favourite Ong Beng Hee kept on court for only ten minutes before his opponent Majid Khan retired injured with the score standing at 11-8, 9-1.

Second seed Jonathan Kemp became the second Englishman to reach the last eight when he beat UAE-based Pakistani Khawaja Adil Maqbool 11-4, 11-10 (2-0), 11-5.
