Fuchs & Rehman Reach Austrian Open Semis

31 Mar 2007

Andreas Fuchs and Aqeel Rehman kept local hopes of an all-Austrian final alive when they battled through to the last four of the Austrian Open after four-game victories in the quarter-finals of the PSA Tour event at Squashclub Manhattan in Vienna.

Fuchs became the only qualifier to reach the semi-finals when he secured an 11-5, 7-11, 11-6, 11-9 win in 46 minutes over compatriot Jakob Dirnberger, avenging the defeat by his 26-year-old opponent in last week's Austrian National Championships.

The 28-year-old former National champion from Vienna now meets fifth seed Ricky Davies after the Welshman upset Germany's No3 seed Andre Haschker 11-2, 7-11, 11-4, 11-5 in 52 minutes.

Rehman, the top seed from Salzburg, defeated England's No6 seed Robbie Temple 11-7, 11-7, 10-11 (1-3), 11-4 in 48 minutes and will now face fourth seed Stephen Coppinger for a place in the final.

Coppinger, a 22-year-old UK-based South African who has not yet dropped a game in the tournament, cruised to an 11-6, 11-5, 11-6 victory in 29 minutes over Austrian wild card player Stefan Brauneis.
