Austrians Rule In Vienna!

30 Mar 2007

In a remarkable opening day of action in the Austrian Open, all four local players survived the first round to take places in the quarter-finals of the PSA Tour event at Squashclub Manhattan in Vienna.

Andreas Fuchs became the only qualifier to make the last eight after coming through an 82-minute marathon encounter with Matias Valenzuela, beating the No7 seed from Argentina 11-8, 10-11 (3-5), 9-11, 11-6, 11-6.

In the only all-Austrian quarter-final, the 28-year-old former National champion from Vienna takes on Jakob Dirnberger. The unseeded 26-year-old, also from Vienna, captured the biggest scalp when he came back from a game down to beat Germany's No2 seed Friedrich Scheel 7-11, 11-9, 11-8, 11-9.

Austria's top seed Aqeel Rehman had a tough fight in his first round match. The 21-year-old from Salzburg dropped the first two games against French qualifier Johan Bouquet - but regained the upper hand to secure a 7-11, 7-11, 11-7, 11-3, 11-8 victory after 65 minutes.

Wild card Stefan Brauneis delighted local fans when he upset Egypt's No8 seed Ahmed Khalil 11-7, 11-9, 11-8 in just 26 minutes. The 27-year-old Austrian international - again, playing in his hometown - progresses to face South African Stephen Coppinger, the fourth seed, for a place in the semi-finals.
