Hutton Stuns Aboelkheir To Gatecrash Gaynor Cup Semis

8 Feb 2025

England's Jasmine Hutton produced a major upset over in-form Fayrouz Aboelkheir to claim an unexpected place in the semi-finals of the Cincinnati Gaynor Cup in Ohio. Meanwhile Malaysia's Sivasangari Subramaniam as well as home favourites Olivia Weaver and Amanda Sobhy also progressed in a blockbuster quarter-finals day in the women's PSA World Your Silver event at the Cincinnati Country Club.

In the first match of the round, 8th seed Hutton upset No.4 seed Aboelkheir in an exciting four-game battle. Hutton came into the match after a straight games win over France's Marie Stephan, and carried on that momentum to confidently win game one 11-5.

Aboelkheir, who claimed her first World event title at the Carol Weymuller Open in the previous week, settled into the match, restoring parity at one-all.

The third and fourth games were contested closely, with the Englishwoman clinching an 11-9 win before edging the victory in a tense tie-break to earn a place in her first semi-final of the season.

Speaking after the match, Hutton said: "I definitely feel like I've found some good form, which I'm really happy with.

"Obviously credit to Fayrouz, she won last week. It's hard to back up, physically especially after having so many matches on the bounce."

No.3 seed Sivasangari Subramaniam defeated Torrie Malik in the penultimate match of the night, with the Malaysian commanding proceedings throughout.

The Englishwoman came into the match having upset both compatriots Lucy Beecroft and Sarah-Jane Perry in the earlier rounds, but the momentum wasn't enough to overcome the Malaysian, who won out in straight games to earn a spot in the semi-finals against top seed and defending champion Weaver.

Elsewhere, American duo and No.1 and No.2 seeds Amanda Sobhy and Olivia Weaver both progressed to the semi-finals with convincing 3/0 wins over Salma Hany and Rachel Arnold respectively.
