Golan Overcomes Rodriguez In Bogotá Final

3 Sep 2007

Borja Golan celebrated his second appearance in a PSA Tour final in Bogotá in a week by winning the Bogotá Tennis Club Circuito Mundial De Squash in the Colombian capital.

The 24-year-old Spaniard, who was runner-up in last week's Club El Nogal Colombian Open, faced local star Miguel Angel Rodriguez in the final of the 2-star PSA Tour event at Bogotá Tennis Club.

Rodriguez, the 21-year-old South American champion from Bogotá, delighted the local crowd by overturning two higher-seeded opponents - Mexico's Pan American Games champion Eric Galvez and England's second seed Joey Barrington - to provide unexpected Colombian interest in the climax.

After losing the first game in a close-fought tie-break, Rodriguez drew level by taking the second game.

But Golan, who returned to the world top 20 rankings in the new PSA list published this month, piled on the pressure to close out the match 11-10 (2-0), 6-11, 11-3, 11-6 after 71 minutes.

Golan, whose success takes his career PSA title tally to 15, now heads to England where he will begin the defence of his title next week in the Wolverhampton Open.

Final:
[1] Borja Golan (ESP) bt [5] Miguel Angel Rodriguez (COL) 11-10 (2-0), 6-11, 11-3, 11-6 (71m)
