Aditya Jagtap & Tesni Evans Win Welsh Junior Open Titles
18 Mar 2010
There was home success in the women's event, and a successful defence in the men's, in the Welsh Junior U19 Open, one of the leading events on the European Squash Federation Junior Circuit, in Cardiff.
Welsh teenager Tesni Evans delighted home supporters by lifting the women's trophy. But the 17-year-old top seed had a tough battle against Andrea Malinova in the final, where she had to fight back from two games down to beat the second-seeded Slovakian 8-11, 6-11, 11-2, 11-4, 11-3.
The win marks the second Welsh success in the women's championship in three years.
Top-seeded Indian Aditya Jagtap returned to Cardiff to defend the men's title he won for the first time last year - and duly reached the final as expected, but only after recovering from deficits in both the quarter-finals and semis.
The 17-year-old, a pupil at Millfield School in England, faced 16-year-old Egyptian Marwan El Shorbagy, a 3/4 seed who upset England's second seed Tom Dwyer in the semi-finals.
Jagtap, the Indian Junior National champion, was in sparkling form in the final, despatching El Shorbagy 11-6, 11-6, 11-5 to retain the title in style.
