Qualifiers Khan & Salazar Secure Semi-Final Slots In Calgary

26 Jan 2008

After taking out high-seeded opponents in the first round, qualifiers Arturo Salazar and Majid Khan continued their giant-killing run in the Talisman Energy Bankers Hall Club Open to secure semi-final slots in the $15,000 PSA Tour squash event at Bankers Hall Club in Calgary, Canada.

Salazar, a 20-year-old Mexican from San Luis Potosi, took out Egypt's No7 seed Amr Swelim 11-9, 7-11, 11-4, 11-4 in 51 minutes to set up a meeting with local favourite Shahier Razik. The 30-year-old from Toronto despatched Bernardo Samper, the sixth seed from Colombia, 11-3, 11-6, 11-2.

Majid Khan defeated unseeded US player Christopher Gordon, ranked 23 places higher in the world, 11-7, 11-7, 11-9 in 41 minutes - and will now face a second Mexican in the last four.

Perhaps energized by his fellow countryman's win, eighth seed Jorge Isaac Baltazar Ferreira upset 2006 champion Matthew Giuffre, the fourth seed from Canada, 9-11, 11-8, 11-9, 11-10 (3-1).
