Garner Survives Marathon Qualifier in Budapest
21 Oct 2004
Englishmen Ben Garner and Peter Barker secured places in the main draw of the Nissan Hungarian Open after wildly contrasting victories in the qualifying finals in Budapest.
While Barker brushed aside last week's Czech Classic champion Jan Koukal 11-1 11-2 11-2 in just 30 minutes, it took Garner exactly three times longer - and two tie-breaks - to survive his match with fellow Englishman Joey Barrington 4-11 11-10 11-10 7-11 11-8.
The $40,000 Hungarian Open makes a welcome return to the PSA Tour after a six-year break - and features a high quality field led by Egypt's world champion Amr Shabana. The world No6 from Cairo is expected to face Canada's Jonathon Power, the 1997 champion, in the final on Sunday.
