Duncalf Topples Title-Holder To Take Tenerife Title

19 Dec 2005

England's Jenny Duncalf rounded off her squash year in fine style when she upset compatriot Vicky Botwright, the top seed and defending champion, in the final of the Prince Women's Canary Islands Open to lift the last WISPA World Tour title of 2005 in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain.

Duncalf, the world No8 from Harrogate in Yorkshire, was in sparkling form throughout the event and reached the final without dropping a game - conceding only 15 points in three rounds.

Botwright, the world No5 from Manchester, was celebrating her fifth WISPA final of the year and looking to retain the Tenerife title she won for the first time in 2004.

But Duncalf was on song from the outset, beating her higher-ranked England team-mate 9-4 9-6 9-4 to clinch the second WISPA crown of her career.

It was the pair's fifth WISPA meeting, but the 23-year-old from Yorkshire had only previously beaten her rival once - and that was in the final of the 2003 Atlanta Masters when Duncalf picked up her maiden Tour title.

Final:
