Durbach Dumped As Selby Scores In Saskatoon

28 Oct 2005

England's Daryl Selby continued his giant-killing exploits on the PSA Tour when he removed top seed Rodney Durbach at the first round stage of the Saskatoon Boast Open at the Saskatoon YMCA in Saskatoon, Canada.

The unseeded 22-year-old from Witham in Essex, who reached the semi-finals of the Goodlife Open in Ottawa last week, upset the South African favourite 11-8 11-10 3-11 11-7 in 59 minutes.

Selby now faces Australia's seventh seed Simon Carruthers, who recovered from two games down to beat compatriot Wade Johnstone 6-11 8-11 11-9 11-8 11-8 in 75 minutes.

Zimbabwe qualifier Jesse Engelbrecht spanked the surprised eighth seed Nicholas Kyme, from Bermuda - sending him packing 11-7 11-2 11-9 in 27 minutes. Jesse had perhaps the toughest qualifying draw, and said later: "The tough draw definitely is an advantage as long as you can continue playing strongly and keep the momentum going."

Laurent Elriani provided the final upset of the day, winning a tough four-game first round match against England's fifth seed Scott Handley. After sharing the first two games, the Frenchman won the last two in tiebreakers 5-3 and 4-2.
