28 Oct 2005

England's Alison Waters caused an upset on the opening day of action in the Women's Carol Weymuller Open in New York when she defeated seventh seed Annelize Naude in straight games in the first round at Heights Casino.

Waters, the 21-year-old world No16 in her first appearance in this established event on the WISPA World Tour, despatched her Dutch opponent - ranked two places higher - 9-6 9-2 9-5 to earn a quarter-final clash with compatriot Vicky Botwright. The fourth seed from Manchester beat Hong Kong's Rebecca Chiu 9-1 9-0 9-3.

Favourite Vanessa Atkinson was made to fight for her place in the last eight by England's unseeded Fiona Geaves.
