Refreshed Champions Wolverhampton Looking For First Season Win

24 Oct 2005

Champions Wolverhampton are introducing fresh young blood into their squad for tomorrow's fourth round tie in the Premier League in a bid to gain their first win of the new season.

England U19 international Fiona Moverley, 18, from Hull, makes her debut in the away fixture against Nottingham, where she is expected to face Alex Norman. Scotland's Kristen Johnson also returns to Wolverhampton after representing Strings Tewkesbury last season. The 20-year-old is due to play Nottingham-based Irishman Arthur Gaskin.

Australia's British Open champion Anthony Ricketts will lead the Wolverhampton squad for the third time this season - and will be hoping to put aside last week's loss to Lee Beachill, of Manchester/Pontefract, when he takes on Nottingham's Simon Parke.

"Fiona is making her debut in a match which I hope will get our season kick started," said Wolverhampton team manager Stephen Russell. "Kristen played for us a few years ago at Duffield and has continued to improve, so with the more experienced three at the top I am cautiously optimistic that we will get a result."

With the North Group's Churchill Edgbaston Priory taking a rest, former champions Manchester/Pontefract will be hoping to overtake the Birmingham team when they face Benz-Bavarian Duffield away from home. Beachill will again lead the trans-Pennine cooperative, facing the Derbyshire hosts' French top string Renan Lavigne. India's former British Junior Open champion Saurav Ghosal, now a Leeds University student who trains at Pontefract, will be making his debut for the visitors, taking on Duffield's Lee Drew.

After mixed success on the road in the South Group - a narrow win at Team Chichester and a heavy loss at Oberthur Strings Tewkesbury - UniSport Guildford host event newcomers Surrey Health & Racquets Croydon, led by former world number one Peter Nicol.

Nicol will face Guildford's top string Stacey Ross, who, as a junior in the late eighties, lost to Ross in the finals of both the British Junior U14 Open and the British Junior U16 Open. Ross, who has recovered from a groin injury which caused his retirement in last week's match, will be hoping to repeat this success over a decade and a half later.

Surrey's Emma Matthews makes a return to the UniSport side after a year's absence - and will face Croydon first-timer Stephanie Brind, the former world No4 from Kent.

The other tie in the South group will see Team Chichester entertain University Sport Birmingham, who will be without the injured Joey Barrington. Gloucestershire's Jon Harford will lead the visitors, taking on the Chichester No1 Ben Garner, fresh from his semi-final appearance in last weekend's Athens Open in Greece.
