Iskandar Repeats Papa New Guinea Final Triumph

21 Aug 2005

Malaysia's top seed Mohd Azlan Iskandar triumphed over second seed Cameron Pilley of Australia in the final of the 2005 Steel Industries PNG International in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.

The hard-fought five-game encounter that gives Iskandar his sixth PSA Tour title was almost a repeat of the 2004 final.

Pilley, from New South Wales, took a one nil lead via a tie-breaker in a first game that saw both players concentrating on playing steady error-free squash. Iskandar upped the pace in the second game which led to Pilley making a string of unforced errors that allowed the Malaysian to comfortably draw level.

The 23-year-old Sarawak-born Malaysian took the crucial third game in another tiebreaker. However it did not take Pilley long to level the score in a fourth game that lasted only seven minutes - and featured a number of errors by a tiring Iskandar.

The Malaysian managed to regroup himself and came out all guns blazing to take the fifth and final game to win 10-11 11-6 11-10 5-11 11-4 in 69 minutes.
