Rodriguez Captures Quito Crown

3 Aug 2014

Colombian squash star Miguel Angel Rodriguez extended his haul of PSA World Tour titles to 24 when he dismissed Peruvian teenager Diego Elias in the final of the Rancho Squash Open, the PSA Challenger 10 event in its inaugural year at Club Rancho San Francisco in the Ecuador capital Quito.

Appearing in the first Tour event in Ecuador for almost four years, World No.14 Rodriguez reached the 32nd final of his career when he beat Mexico's No4 seed Eric Galvez in four games.

Fifth seed Elias, the 17-year-old from Lima who made history in May by becoming the first Peru player to win a PSA Tour title, made his breakthrough in the quarter-finals where he upset second-seeded Mexican Cesar Salazar.

Elias made his third Tour final in three months after seeing off unseeded Mexican Erik Tepos Valtierra in the other semi.

Elias, ranked almost 80 places lower than the favourite, did his best to make an impact against Rodriguez in the final.

But a flawless performance by the Colombian maestro saw Rodriguez win 11-6, 11-4, 11-5 in 33 minutes to claim his third Tour title in Ecuador.

Final:
[1] Miguel Angel Rodriguez (COL) bt [5] Diego Elias (PER) 11-6, 11-4, 11-5 (33m)
