El Weleily Retains World Title For Egypt

27 Jul 2005

After striding through the tournament without dropping a single game, India's top seed Joshna Chinappa met her match in the final of the Women's World Junior Championship when she lost out in straight games to Raneem El Weleily of Egypt.

El Weleily, the 16-year-old second seed from Alexandria, showed her strength and determination in the semi-finals when she fought back from two games down to beat fourth seed Tenille Swartz, the first ever South African to make it to the event's last four.

But the youngster was ruthless in the climax, despatching favourite Chinappa 9-3 9-4 10-8 to become the second successive Egyptian winner of the world junior crown.

Final:
[2] Raneem El Weleily (EGY) bt [1] Joshna Chinappa (IND) 9-3, 9-4, 10-8
