Top Seeds To Contest World Final

25 Jul 2005

Joshna Chinappa of India and Raneem El Weleily of Egypt - the favourite and second seed, respectively - will meet in the final of the Women's World Junior Championship in Herentals in Belgium.

Chinappa, the Asian junior champion from Chennai, despatched Egypt's quarter-final heroine Sara Badr 9-6 9-6 9-2 to maintain her straight games victory run in the event. It was 24 hours earlier that Badr disappointed local followers with a five-game upset over Belgium's third seed Charlie de Rycke.

A shock looked on the cards in the other semi-final when South Africa's fourth seed Tenille Swartz opened up a two-game lead over the second seed. But the wily El Weleily - a 16-year-old from Alexandria - fought back with determination, and ultimately won the battle 4-9 6-9 9-5 9-7 9-3.

Semi-finals:
[1] Joshna Chinappa (IND) bt [5/8] Sara Badr (EGY) 9-6, 9-6, 9-2
[2] Raneem El Weleily (EGY) bt [4] Tenille Swartz (RSA) 4-9, 6-9, 9-5, 9-7, 9-3
