17 Apr 2010
Qualifier Shawn Delierre ensured domestic interest in the final of the inaugural PSA Northern Ontario Championship after claiming a surprise place in the semi-finals of the $10,000 PSA World Tour squash event at Sudbury YMCA in Sudbury, Canada.
After undergoing leg surgery last year, the 27-year-old from Montreal is enjoying his fourth successive success as a qualifier in a North American Tour event over the past six weeks. Delierre made his Sudbury breakthrough in the first round, when he upset England's fourth seed James Snell.
Then, in the quarter-final, the former world No40 defeated unseeded compatriot Matthew Serediak 11-5, 11-5, 11-4 in 27 minutes to set up a semi-final clash with another Canadian Shahier Razik.
Top seed Razik, the world No25 from Toronto, defeated top-ranked Austrian Aqeel Rehman 12-10, 11-3, 11-1.
The other semi-final will be an Australian/Czech affair between third-seeded Queenslander Zac Alexander and second seed Jan Koukal. Alexander beat sixth-seeded Canadian Andrew McDougall 11-2, 11-7, 11-3 while the Czech number one defeated English qualifier Olivier Pett 12-10, 11-9, 11-5.
