Anjema Wins Manitoba Open Crown

15 Mar 2010

Dutch squash star Laurens Jan Anjema scored his second successive PSA Tour win over Daryl Selby in a week in Canada when he beat the Englishman in straight games in the final of the $20,000 Winnipeg Building & Decorating Manitoba Open title at Winnipeg Squash Racquet Club in Winnipeg.

The two top seeds, who had earlier contested the final of the National Bank Financial Group International in Montreal, reached the Winnipeg climax in contrasting styles - Anjema brushing aside seventh-seeded Mexican Arturo Salazar in 55 minutes, while second seed Selby was stretched for 98 minutes before overcoming local hero Shahier Razik, the fourth seed and a twice former champion, in five games.

But Selby, the world No12 who was celebrating his second year in a row in the Manitoba final, was unable to take advantage of his superior ranking over the five times Dutch champion from The Hague, ranked 15 in the world.

Anjema, who only dropped a single game en-route to the final, made up for the disappointment of finishing as runner-up in 2007 by despatching Selby 11-7, 11-6, 11-5 in 55 minutes to pick up his second Tour final of the year - but the tenth of his career.

Final:
[1] Laurens Jan Anjema (NED) bt [2] Daryl Selby (ENG) 11-7, 11-6, 11-5 (55m)
