Selby Stretched By Salazar In Manitoba Open

12 Mar 2010

All eight seeds made it safely through to the quarter-finals of the Winnipeg Building & Decorating Manitoba Open in Canada, but second seed Daryl Selby had to overcome a two-game deficit before overcoming unseeded Cesar Salazar in the first round of the $20,000 PSA World Tour squash event at Winnipeg Squash Racquet Club in Winnipeg.

Englishman Selby, the world No12 who arrived in Winnipeg fresh from an appearance in last week's final of the National Bank Financial Group International in Montreal, had to call upon all his experience to defeat Mexican Salazar, ranked 56 places lower in the world, 8-11, 10-12, 11-8, 11-8, 11-4.

The 27-year-old from Essex will now face fifth seed Martin Knight after the New Zealander beat Canadian Thomas Brinkman 11-4, 8-11, 11-7, 11-9.

Top seed Laurens Jan Anjema, winner of the Tour title in Montreal, had a comfortable 11-8, 11-1, 11-4 win over Australian qualifier Zac Alexander - and will now take on eighth seed Jan Koukal for a place in the last four.

Czech number one Koukal also beat an Australian qualifier - but had to fight back from two games down before getting the better of Wade Johnstone 6-11, 10-12, 11-7, 11-9, 11-4.
