Whitlock & Penders Win Austrian Junior Open Titles

19 Feb 2010

There were first time winners in the Austrian Junior U19 Open when Dutchman Rick Penders and England's Emily Whitlock emerged victorious in the European Squash Federation Junior Circuit event staged in the Austrian capital Vienna.

Second seed Penders faced Slovakian favourite Miroslav Celler in the men's U19 final after both players had overcome 3/4 seeds in the semis.

Celler, 18, from Bratislava, took the opening game - but Penders came back to take the next three, winning 5-11, 11-8, 11-9, 11-8 to claim his first ESF U19 title.

It was on the eve of her 16th birthday that Emily Whitlock, the daughter of England international Phil Whitlock, faced local star Sandra Polak, the second seed.

But top seed Whitlock was too strong for the 18-year-old from Vienna, winning 11-8, 11-2, 11-2.

The triumph marked the second U19 ESF title for the British U17 National champion who made her breakthrough last September by winning the Nordic Junior U19 trophy in Sweden.

[2] Rick Penders (NED) bt [1] Miroslav Celler (SVK) 5-11, 11-8, 11-9, 11-8
