Hosts Denied Both U19 Titles In Italian Junior Open

30 Jun 2009

England's Robert Downer and Austria's Sandra Polak emerged triumphant in the finals of the Italian Junior U19 Open Squash Championships - putting paid to a domestic double in the European Squash Federation Junior Circuit event at the FIGS National Centre in Riccione, Italy.

Downer, a 17-year-old from Hampshire, was seeded to win the men's title - but his Italian opponent Dimitri Diamadopoulos progressed two rounds beyond his seeded position to make a surprise appearance in the climax.

It took the Englishman four games, but Downer ultimately prevailed 11-6, 11-9, 4-11, 11-5 to add the Italian title to the Irish Junior U19 Open crown he won last November in Galway.

The women's event was run in a pool format - with Sandra Polak, the 17-year-old winner of the Austrian Junior U19 Open title in March, coming through unscathed after beating Italy's Elisabetta Priante 5-11, 11-2, 11-5, 11-4.

Men's Final:
[1] Robert Downer (ENG) bt [5/8] Dimitri Diamadopoulos (ITA) 11-6, 11-9, 4-11, 11-5
