First-Time Titles For Hungarian & Irish Junior Open Winners

30 Dec 2008

The two Grand Prix events on the European Squash Federation Junior Circuit in November produced first time U19 titles for all four winners.

Slovakian Tomas Toth and England's Kerry Sample were the victors in the Head Hungarian Junior U19 Open Championships in Szeged, Hungary. After surviving a four-game semi-final in the men's event, top seed Toth, 18, from Bratislava, beat Sweden's Johan Detter, a 3/4 seed, 11-7, 13-11, 11-6.

The women's event ended in a round-robin play-off for the top three places, with Hungarian Zsófia Marton losing to both Kerry Sample (England) and Sophie Yorke (Wales) before 18-year-old Sample, from Buckinghamshire, beat Yorke 11-3, 8-11, 11-1, 11-8 to claim the title.

In the IACT Irish Junior U19 Open at the Galway Lawn Tennis Club in Galway, there was disappointment for Milou van der Heijden when the Netherlands 18-year-old missed out in the women's final for the second year in a row. The second seed faced English favourite Millie Tomlinson - the Derbyshire 16-year-old justifying her top seeding by winning 11-7, 11-9, 5-11, 12-10.

The men's final was an all-English affair in which Robert Downer also asserted his status as top seed when the 16-year-old from Hampshire beat second seed Ben Rodgers 11-5, 11-4, 11-4.
