Unstoppable Grainger Claims Atwater Cup In Canada

5 Apr 2009

US squash star Natalie Grainger maintained her relentless charge on the WISPA World Tour this year by winning the Women's Atwater Cup in style at the Atwater Club in Montreal, Canada.

The new world number two from Greenwich - who has already picked up three Tour titles this year, plus her third US national crown - reached the final of the $25,000 WISPA event without dropping game.

After dismissing Australia's defending champion Kasey Brown in the semi-finals, Grainger faced England's Laura Lengthorn-Massaro after the third seed scored a stunning upset over top seed Natalie Grinham, the world No4 from the Netherlands.

But second seed Grainger was too strong for the 25-year-old world No7 from Preston in the final, winning 11-6, 11-9, 11-4 to extend her unbeaten Tour run this year to 16 matches!

The triumph brings Grainger's career title haul to 23. But, interestingly, whilst the 31-year-old former South African has won 10 Tour titles in the USA since becoming a US citizen in February 2007, the Atwater Cup success marks Grainger's first ever title triumph in Canada!

Final:
[2] Natalie Grainger (USA) bt [3] Laura Lengthorn-Massaro (ENG) 11-6, 11-9, 11-4
