Duncalf Makes Up For Cairo Disappointment

11 Dec 2008

England number one Jenny Duncalf made up for the disappointment of failing to lead her country to victory over Egypt in the Women's World Team Championship last week in Cairo by beating Egyptian number three Raneem El Weleily in the quarter-finals of the inaugural Women's Sharm El Sheikh Open, a $26,200 WISPA World Tour Silver event in South Sinai, Egypt.

But the 26-year-old No2 seed from Yorkshire was taken to four games before defeating the seventh-seeded teenager 7-11, 11-9, 11-3, 11-5 in 33 minutes.

Duncalf will now take on fourth seed Shelley Kitchen after the New Zealander beat England's eighth seed Dominique Lloyd-Walter 12-10, 11-6, 11-9.

The other semi-final will be an 'all-Egyptian' clash between Australia's Cairo-based Rachael Grinham and the top-ranked Egyptian Omneya Abdel Kawy - the pair's seventh WISPA Tour meeting in Egypt since 2003.

Grinham, the top seed, was taken to five games by fifth seed Jaclyn Hawkes before beating the New Zealander 11-9, 9-11, 11-9, 7-11, 11-6 - while third seed Abdel Kawy was also stretched the full distance before overcoming England's sixth seed Lauren Briggs 11-3, 6-11, 4-11, 11-9, 11-7 in exactly one hour.
