Home Hero Borja Golan Wins Spanish Open Crown

8 Dec 2008

Top-ranked Spaniard Borja Golan delighted the local crowds on the Spanish island of Tenerife when he beat Egypt's Mohamed El Shorbagy in the final of the $22,000 OHL Spanish Open at Centro Insular de Squash de Tenerife in Santa Cruz to become the first local winner of the PSA Tour squash event.

The top seed reached the 25th Tour final of his career after despatching Australian Scott Arnold in straight games in 35 minutes - while El Shorbagy, the 17-year-old fourth seed, had to battle for more than twice that time in the other semi-final to upset second-seeded compatriot Omar Mosaad and reach his maiden PSA final.

But the reigning world junior champion fully stretched the experienced Golan, ranked 14 in the world - and twice levelled the match after the Spaniard took game leads.

Golan ultimately prevailed 11-4, 8-11, 11-6, 7-11, 11-8 in 78 minutes to win the 18th PSA Tour title of his career.

The 25-year-old from Santiago follows in a distinguished line of former PSA Spanish Open champions, including Amr Shabana - the most recent winner in Seville in 2003 - and Jahangir Khan and Jansher Khan.

Final:
[1] Borja Golan (ESP) bt [4] Mohamed El Shorbagy (EGY) 11-4, 8-11, 11-6, 7-11, 11-8 (78m)
