Pierrepont & Gaultier Win Macau Titles

2 Dec 2008

England's Suzie Pierrepont and Frenchman Gregory Gaultier secured the titles in the 2008 Macau Open after contrasting finals in Macau, the first European colony in China.

Top seed Gregory Gaultier, the world No3 from France, sailed through to the final of the men's $52,500 5-star PSA Tour event without dropping a game.

In the 30th PSA Tour final appearance of his career - and his fifth this year - Gaultier faced tour rival Karim Darwish, the Egyptian who succeeded him as world No2 in the Dunlop PSA rankings.

But it was Gaultier's day as the 25-year-old from Aix-en-Provence despatched second seed Darwish 11-6, 11-9, 11-5 to win the 14th Tour title of his career.

The final of the women's $16,000 WISPA World Tour event produced a stunning upset as England's sixth seed Suzie Pierrepont overcame her third higher-ranked opponent in three days.

The sixth seed from Sussex, who is now living in the USA, beat Hong Kong's top seed Rebecca Chiu in the semi-finals - then faced second seed Samantha Teran in the climax.

Belying the fact that almost 20 ranking positions separate the pair, 23-year-old Pierrepont battled for five games to beat her Mexican opponent, the world No18, 11-6, 7-11, 11-9, 9-11, 11-4.

The victory earns Pierrepont the fourth - and biggest - Tour title of her career.
