Reta Rallies Into Ohio Semis

15 Nov 2008

In a clash described by tournament organiser Charlie Johnson as 'the match of the tournament so far' unseeded Canadian Runa Reta battled for 53 minutes to overcome second-seeded New Zealander Louis Crome in the quarter-finals of the Women's Ohio Open in the USA to reach the semi-finals of the $16,000 WISPA World Tour squash event at Dayton Squash Center in Dayton, Ohio.

After dropping the first game, Crome fought back to take the next two and looked to be heading towards her anticipated place in the next round. But Reta, 27, from Ottawa, took the fourth, then came from match ball at 7-10 down in the fifth to score her impressive 11-7, 5-11, 6-11, 11-6, 12-10 upset.

It will be a surprise all-Canadian semi-final in the lower half of the draw as Alana Miller, the sixth seed from Winnipeg, upset Ireland's No4 seed Aisling Blake 11-7, 11-8, 11-1.

The other semi will be the match predicted by the seedings - between English event favourite Dominique Lloyd-Walter and Italian Manuela Manetta, the third seed.

Quarter-finals:
[1] Dominique Lloyd-Walter (ENG) bt [5] Lauren Siddall (ENG) 11-3, 6-11, 11-8, 11-5
[3] Manuela Manetta (ITA) bt [8] Tara Mullins (CAN) 11-9, 9-11, 12-10, 11-9
[6] Alana Miller (CAN) bt [4] Aisling Blake (IRL) 11-7, 11-8, 11-1
Runa Reta (CAN) bt [2] Louise Crome (NZL) 11-7, 5-11, 6-11, 11-6, 12-10
