Home Hero Golan Reaches Santiago Final

8 Nov 2008

Spanish squash fans will be treated to a dream men's Santiago Open final after hometown hero Borja Golan fought back from two games down to upset Dutch favourite Laurens Jan Anjema in the semi-finals of the 3-star PSA Tour event at Shopping Center Area Central in Santiago de Compostela.

Reproducing the same form which saw him earn a surprise second round place in last month's World Open in England, Golan thrilled his local fans by beating world No14 Anjema 6-11, 7-11, 11-1, 11-7, 11-7 in an 80-minute marathon.

It was the 25-year-old fourth seed from Santiago's first Tour win over the Dutchman in four meetings.

Golan, who celebrated a career-high world No16 ranking this month, now goes on to face Stewart Boswell in the final. The No2 seed from Australia despatched surprise opponent Miguel Angel Rodriguez, the fifth seed from Colombia, 11-6, 11-8, 11-1.

Boswell, who is marking his 30th appearance in a PSA Tour final, will be meeting Golan for the first time.

The women's WISPA World Tour Tour 4 event will also feature a surprise final after England's seventh seed Lauren Selby battled to an 11-9, 11-8, 9-11, 11-8 semi-final win over fifth-seeded compatriot Emma Chorley.

Selby, 24, from Essex, had earlier upset second seed Laura Mylotte in a five-game quarter-final.

Now in her maiden WISPA Tour final, Selby will face France's top seed Camille Serme, who put paid to an all-English final when she ended Victoria Lust's brave run, beating the qualifier 11-7, 12-10, 11-6 to reach her fifth Tour final.
