Corren Stretched By Compatriot Again In Auckland

18 Aug 2007

For the second time in 24 hours, Australian Mike Corren was forced to battle back from two games down to overcome a compatriot in the Auckland Open at the North Shore Squash Club in Auckland, New Zealand.

Now through to the final of the PSA Tour event for the second year in a row, third seed Corren upset second-seeded fellow Aussie Steve Finitsis 3-11, 11-9, 4-11, 11-10 (3-1), 11-7 in today's gruelling 73-minute semi-final encounter.

Corren, now in his 22nd Tour final, also won his quarter-final in five, taking 82 minutes to dispose of another Aussie, Cameron White.

The 33-year-old will now need to dig deep into his energy reserves for Sunday's title decider against top seed Kashif Shuja. The kiwi number one is through to the 13th PSA Tour final of his career after beating fourth-seeded Australian Ryan Cuskelly 11-4, 11-9, 9-11, 11-7 in 64 minutes.

Semi-finals:
[1] Kashif Shuja (NZL) bt [4] Ryan Cuskelly (AUS) 11-4, 11-9, 9-11, 11-7 (64m)
[3] Mike Corren (AUS) bt [2] Steve Finitsis (AUS) 3-11, 11-9, 4-11, 11-10 (3-1), 11-7 (73m)
