Koukal Captures Czech Classic Crown

15 Oct 2004

Local star Jan Koukal lifted his second PSA Tour trophy in eight months in his home town of Prague when he beat Australian Raj Nanda in a dramatic final of the Czech Classic in the country's capital city.

The 21-year-old third seed - who won the Czech Open title in February - was two games down to the seventh-seeded Australian. But, much to the delight of the packed local crowd, the plucky Prague player fought back to clinch a 9-11 7-11 11-6 11-4 11-2 victory over the 26-year-old from Brisbane in 66 minutes.

"It was an outstanding match that thrilled the spectators," said event organiser Tomas Cvikl. "Of course winning in front of the home crowd is always the best bonus for everyone.

"After Jan lost the first two games, Raj couldn't hold the pace of the game so it was an easy fifth game for the Czech number one. It was a very good performance from both players, but Jan truly deserved the title," added Cvikl.

Final:
[3] Jan Koukal (CZE) bt [7] Raj Nanda (AUS) 9-11, 7-11, 11-6, 11-4, 11-2 (66m)
