30 Jan 2007

South Africans Clinton Leeuw and Stephen Coppinger - both ranked well outside the world's top 200 - earned surprise places in the main draw of the inaugural Grays Norwegian Open after upsets in the qualifying finals of the 1-star PSA Tour event at the new Myrens Sportssenter in Oslo, Norway.

Leeuw, in only his second Tour appearance, battled for almost one and a half hours to overcome England's Shaun le Roux 7-11, 9-11, 11-7, 11-10 (4-2), 11-9.

Coppinger also despatched an Englishman. The 22-year-old former South African junior number one beat David Barnett 11-7, 10-11 (0-2), 11-10 (2-0), 11-8 in 51 minutes and will now face top seed Daryl Selby, also from England, in the first round.

Kiwis Campbell Grayson and Joshua Greenfield had much more straightforward journeys into the main draw - Grayson beating Rene Mijs, from the Netherlands, 11-8, 11-8, 11-3 and Greenfield taking out Welshman Ricky Davies 11-3, 11-7, 11-10 (2-0) in just 28 minutes.
