Beng Hee Bursts Into Dayton Quarters

27 Jan 2007

Malaysia's unseeded Ong Beng Hee secured an unexpected place in the men's quarter-finals of the EBS Dayton Open when he upset seventh seed Olli Tuominen in the first round of the $50,000 PSA Tour event in Dayton in the US state of Ohio.

Beng Hee, the world No16, despatched the Finn 11-7, 11-9, 11-10 (2-0) and will now face top seed Thierry Lincou after the Frenchman beat Canadian qualifier Shawn Delierre 11-4, 11-6, 11-10 (5-3).

Australian Cameron Pilley also caused an upset on the opening day of action in the men's event. The 24-year-old from Grafton, NSW, beat England's No seed Adrian Grant 11-7, 11-10 (4-2), 11-8.

There was a major shock in the women's event when fifth seed Jaclyn Hawkes upset fellow New Zealander Shelley Kitchen, the No2 seed, 8-10, 10-9, 9-3, 1-9, 9-6. It was not only the first time the 24-year-old from Auckland had beaten Kitchen, but the first time she had taken a game from her higher-ranked Kiwi rival in four WISPA World Tour meetings.

Hawkes, in her fifth WISPA final, will now face Omneya Abdel Kawy for the title. The top-seeded Egyptian crushed India's unseeded Joshna Chinappa 9-6, 9-0, 9-0 to reach the 13th Tour final of her career.
