Giant-Killer Anjema Reaches Rotary Final

Unseeded Laurens Jan Anjema scored his third upset in as many days when he toppled Egypt's No3 seed Mohammed Abbas to reach the final of the Rotary Heliopolis Open at the National Stadium in Nasr City in the Egyptian capital Cairo.

The 23-year-old Dutchman began his giant-killing run in the $40,000 PSA Tour event when he despatched Canada's sixth seed Shahier Razik in the first round. The next upset came when Anjema ousted favourite Karim Darwish - the world No9 from Cairo who was the event's runner-up twelve months ago.

The semi-final encounter lasted more than an hour, but Anjema triumphed 11-8, 11-9, 4-11, 11-7 to reach the 11th PSA Tour final of his career, but the first since April 2005 when he finished as runner-up in the Irish Open in Dublin.

Despite the loss of the three Egyptians seeded in the last four, Wael El Hindi has ensured that there will be local interest in the final: The fifth seed came back from a game down to beat England's No7 seed Peter Barker 10-11 (1-3), 11-8, 11-10 (2-0), 11-7 in 63 minutes to reach his ninth PSA final.
