Stoker Stuns Top Seed In Carcassone

21 May 2006

England's Georgina Stoker caused the biggest shock in the Women's Carcassone City Open when she defeated top-seeded compatriot Rebecca Botwright in the quarter-finals of the WISPA World Tour event in Carcassone, France.

In an all-north west England clash, fifth seed Stoker resisted a fight back by her Manchester-based opponent to win 9-6, 9-6, 5-9, 3-9, 9-4 - thereby avenging her defeat by Botwright in February's British National Championships.

Stoker, 20, from Liverpool in Merseyside, will now take on Dutch player Orla Noom, the fourth seed from Hoofddorp who beat India's No6 seed Joshna Chinappa 9-3, 9-4, 9-0.

The other semi-final will also include Dutch interest after seventh seed Margriet Huisman upset New Zealand's third seed Louise Crome 4-9, 9-4, 7-9, 10-9, 9-4. The 22-year-old from Arnhem will meet Malaysia's No2 seed Tricia Chuah for a place in the final.
