Samper & Delierre In Bluenose Classic Final

19 Feb 2006

Top seeds Shawn Delierre and Bernardo Samper will contest the final of the Bluenose Classic in Canada after overcoming lower-ranked opponents in the new PSA Tour event in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Samper, the No2 seed from Colombia, was fully stretched in the opening game of the first semi-final against unseeded New Zealander Martin Knight. The 23-year-old from Bogota needed three game balls before establishing a 1/0 lead, but by then had established his authority over his opponent and went on to win 11-9, 11-4, 11-5 in 41 minutes to claim the second PSA Tour final appearance of his career - but the first outside his home country.

Canadian favourite Shawn Delierre opened up a first game lead in the second semi against fourth seed Andras Torok - but the Hungarian fought back to level the match.

After the 23-year-old from Montreal took the third game, Torok began to show signs of fatigue in the fourth. Errors started to creep in and the end was in sight. After 47 minutes, Delierre cinched his 11-6, 8-11, 11-7, 11-5 victory - and almost landed a perfect between-the-legs drop shot from the backcourt, the trick shot of the tournament so far!

The win takes Delierre to the fourth PSA final of his career - the first since making it to Oklahoma City Open last July.

Semi-finals:
[1] Shawn Delierre (CAN) bt [4] Andras Torok (HUN) 11-6, 8-11, 11-7, 11-5 (47m)
[2] Bernardo Samper (COL) bt Martin Knight (NZL) 11-9, 11-4, 11-5 (41m)
