26 Oct 2026

Adam Hawal and Muhammad Ashab Irfan notched up impressive victories over Nicolas Mueller and Juan Vargas, respectively, at the Smart Centres Canada Cup to gatecrash round two of the Silver-level event in Toronto.

World No.61 Hawal recovered from a game down to dispatch world No.33 Mueller 3/1, while world No.59 Irfan held off world No.28 Vargas by the same scoreline to secure their places in the last 16 round.

After losing the first game 12-10, Hawal saw five game balls saved by his experienced 37-year-old Swiss opponent in the second before the Egyptian 18-year-old managed to covert at the sixth attempt to level the match. After two closely-fought encounters, Hawal pulled clear in the third and fourth games with 11-5, 11-3 victories.

Meanwhile Irfan charged into a 2/0 lead against Vargas before the Colombian halved the deficit with an 11-6 triumph in the third game. After trailing 7-2 in the fourth, Vargas recovered to level the score at 8-8 and saved a match ball to force a tiebreak. However Irfan converted at the second time of asking to seal the win.

Bernat Jaume held off an excellent comeback from men's wildcard Karim Aguib Michael, with the Canadian fighting back from 2/0 down to force a fifth game against the Spaniard. However it was Jaume who came out on top in the decider, edging the tiebreak 12-10 to advance to round two.

Elsewhere the Canadian Women's Open 2026, also a Silver-level event on the PSA Squash Tour, got underway today at Brookfield Place, with Hollie Naughton prevailing in the all-Canadian battle with Nicole Bunyan.

Naughton, who faces Nada Abbas in the next round, claimed a 11-5, 11-7, 11-8 success in 27 minutes over her fellow countrywoman.

"It's always tough to play a fellow Canadian and especially playing in this kind of venue," said Naughton post-match.

"I always want to get off to a good start, so it's just usually a lot of nerves in the first match. I'm just really happy to get through.

"Obviously Nicole is Canadian, but she's the other side of Canada so I definitely felt the support. I had my mum and dad in the crowd today, which was fantastic and a lot of friends that I've grown up with. I always feel like I've got the crowd support here."

Canada's Zeina Zein came close to joining her compatriot in round two as the tournament wildcard surged back from 2/1 down against Zeina Mickawy to force a fifth, deciding game. However the Egyptian kept her nerve to win 3/2 in a highly entertaining clash.

Fellow Egyptian Haya Ali staved off a fightback from Ireland's Hannah Craig to claim a 3/2 success, while England's Saran Nghiem kicked the day's play off on the all-glass court with a 3/1 triumph against Nour Heikal.
