Top Seed Orfi Cruises Into Canadian Open Semis
28 Oct 2025
Top seed Amina Orfi comfortably secured her place in the semi-finals of the Canadian Women's Open after toppling fellow Egyptian Nardine Garas at Brookfield Place in Toronto.
Orfi, who arrived in Toronto 24 hours earlier five hours before her opening match after featuring in the final of the US Open in Philadelphia on Saturday night, dispatched her compatriot 3/0 to progress to the last four of the Silver-level event.
The 18-year-old world No.3 was tested by Garas - who was making her quarter-final debut at a PSA Squash Tour Silver event - in the opening game but Orfi moved through the gears to close out a 11-7, 11-3, 11-5 victory in just 26 minutes.
"My body is feeling a lot better. Hopefully tomorrow with my day off I'll be even more ready for the semi-finals," she said post-match.
"I'll train, finish some college work and maybe go out and have a look around. It's my first time in Toronto so I just want to go out and see how it is.
"I don't solo practice every day, but at least three times per week. Usually for around an hour and a half or two hours."
Orfi's semi-final opponent will be 2023 champion Amanda Sobhy, who also claimed a 3/0 success in her quarter-final clash with Tesni Murphy.
Sobhy, who had won all eight of the previous Tour meetings with Murphy, extended that streak to nine matches with a straight games triumph.
World No.9 Sobhy, who was runner-up last year to Tinne Gilis, chalked up a 12-10, 11-8, 11-7 win to tee up a semi-final showdown with Orfi - which will be their first meeting on Tour in two years.
"Amina has been crushing it this season," said Sobhy.
"She's definitely a force but when we played last season, all the pressure was on me and she was the underdog but now the roles are reversed and I'm looking forward to it."
In the Toronto Athletic Club Open, a men's Copper-level event where the quarter finals onwards are also being held at Brookfield Place, No.4 seed Moustafa Elsirty recovered from 2/0 down to defeat unseeded Englishman Perry Malik 3/2 for his place in the last four.
The Egyptian will take on defending champion Leonel Cardenas, who moved a step closer to retaining his title with a 3/0 win over Mohamed Sharaf.
