Young England Takes On Squash Jesters

10 Oct 2005

Surrey's 19-year-old Tom Richards will lead a Young England team, selected by England Squash, to face the Jesters tomorrow evening at Queen's Club in London.

The Frank Strawson Memorial Match has been the traditional start-of-season fixture between the Jesters and an England Squash team for many years. On the same evening, the other sports in which the Jesters participate (eg. real tennis, fives, etc.) play their respective national organisations teams.

Richards, from Weybridge, will be joined in the Young England team by Tom Pashley, 17, from Sussex; Joe Lee, 16, from Surrey; Oliver Pett, 16, from Sussex; and 15-year-old Adrian Waller from Enfield in Middlesex.

The Jesters Club was formed over 75 years ago by Mr Jock Burnett. Jock wanted to continue to play his sport (believed to fives) in a competitive and amiable format after he left school. Hence the Jesters was conceived. Since that date, the club has expanded massively and now has members (several thousand) for squash, real tennis, fives and rackets in the UK, US, South Africa, Canada, Australia, Ireland and other countries.

The 2005 Frank Strawson Memorial Match begins at 6pm on Tuesday 11th October at the Queen's Club.
