Petersen Piles On The Pressure In Carcassone

23 May 2005

Danish doctor Ellen Petersen continued to administer her treatment in the Women's Carcassone City Open when she produced her third - and biggest - upset by beating England's top seed Rebecca Botwright in an hour-long semi-final marathon in the French city of Carcassone.

Petersen's surprise 9-6 10-8 7-9 9-1 victory in 63 minutes over Botwright, the European Champion, takes the unseeded 30-year-old from Odense through to the final of the WISPA World Tour event for the second time in two years.

The other semi-final was also a close-fought marathon which ended in an upset. Spain's second seed Olga Puigdemont Sola led 1/0 and 2/1 - and had two match-balls in the fifth game against third seed Raneem El Weleily. But the plucky 16-year-old Egyptian from Alexandria went on to claim an impressive 6-9 9-1 7-9 9-6 10-8 win in 59 minutes.

While Petersen is celebrating her tenth appearance in a WISPA Tour final, the Carcassone climax will mark British Junior U17 Open champion El Weleily's maiden appearance.

Semi-finals:
Ellen Petersen (DEN) bt [1] Rebecca Botwright (ENG) 9-6, 10-8, 7-9, 9-1 (63m)
[3] Raneem El Weleily (EGY) bt [2] Olga Puigdemont Sola (ESP) 6-9, 9-1, 7-9, 9-6, 10-8 (59m)
