Hedrick Downs Coach White In Melbourne

5 Jul 2012

Australian Rex Hedrick paid the ultimate compliment to his coach Cameron White by beating him in today's second round of the Victorian Open to claim a place in the quarter-finals of the PSA World Tour Challenger 10 squash event at the Melbourne Sports & Aquatic Centre in Melbourne, Australia.

White, a 35-year-old former world No48 who coasted through the qualifying event, showed he still has what it takes when he defeated Australian-based Japanese player Ben Takamizawa Harris in the first round.

And the former PSA Tour regular battled for 54 minutes against his pupil before 23-year-old Hedrick, the fifth seed, finally emerged the victor with an 11-8, 11-3, 11-7 scoreline.

Melbourne-based Hedrick, the world No71, now takes on No2 seed Campbell Grayson after the New Zealander dismissed Frenchman Florent Pontiere 11-4, 11-7, 11-3.

There is home interest in the other quarter-final in the lower half of the draw where Matthew Karwalski takes on sixth-seeded Kiwi Kashif Shuja. Karwalski, the No3 seed from New South Wales, beat fellow countryman Nathan Stevenson 12-10, 11-5, 11-5.

Meanwhile, Malaysia's top seed Mohd Nafiizwan Adnan recovered from almost bowing out in the first round by beating young New Zealander Evan Williams 13-11, 11-3, 11-7 to set up a quarter-final against Argentina's Gonzalo Miranda.

Quarter-final line-up:
[1] Mohd Nafiizwan Adnan (MAS) v [8] Gonzalo Miranda (ARG)
