Akers Brings New Blood To PSA Board

28 Jul 2009

British businessman Christopher Akers has joined the board of the Professional Squash Association.

Voted the UK's Sports Entrepreneur of the Year in 2002, 44-year-old Akers is an investor in a number of public and private companies in the sports, media, entertainment, leisure, travel, technology and IT sectors.

Currently chairman of Sports Resource Group Limited, a sports sponsorship, consultancy and representation business, Akers is also a non-executive director of Hip Hotels Media Limited and Webevents Limited.

After founding the Sports Internet Group plc in March 1999 for £25,000, Akers sold the Aim listed sports content and bookmaking group in July 2000 to BSkyB plc for £301 million!

In August 1996 he acquired Leeds United FC and became chairman and chief executive of Leeds Sporting plc until September 1998 whereupon he left to establish Sports Internet Group plc.

PSA Chairman Ziad Al-Turki is delighted to welcome Akers to the board: "I have known Chris for over two years and have been very impressed with his incredible knowledge of both the sport and business world. His credentials speak for themselves and I feel that Squash is very fortunate to have someone with such an impressive CV.

"He will be able to assist the Board and PSA staff to an enormous degree in developing the future of the sport. His appointment is very timely in terms of the changes that PSA are going through."
