Almezayen Celebrates Home Win In Kuwait
2 Feb 2009
Home hero Abdullah Almezayen delighted the local crowds at the Jena Super Satellite when he lifted the inaugural $6,000 PSA Tour squash event title after a surprise all-Kuwaiti final in South Surrah, Kuwait.
The third seed from Kuwait City made his breakthrough in the semi-finals when he beat Pakistan's Waqar Mehboob, the No2 seed, 11-4, 11-7, 11-3 to claim his unexpected appearance in the final.
But his opponent was an even more unlikely finalist. Playing in his first Tour event after surviving the qualifiers, Salem Fayez despatched a series of seeds from Pakistan and Egypt before lining up against Almezayen in the climax.
But the newcomer was no match for the third seed as 20-year-old Almezayen romped to an 11-3, 11-3, 11-0 victory in 20 minutes to claim the second Tour title of his career.
Final:
[3] Abdullah Almezayen (KUW) bt [Q] Salem Fayez (KUW) 11-3, 11-3, 11-0 (20m)
