Marathon Man Razik Reaps Rewards In Montreal

6 Nov 2007

Canada celebrated home success in the inaugural Club Sportif Cote de Liesse Open when favourite Shahier Razik survived a marathon 107-minute final against Colombian Miguel Angel Rodriguez to pick up his third PSA Tour squash title of the year at Club CDL in Montreal.

With a 79-minute win in the quarter-finals followed by a 97-minute triumph in the semis, the 29-year-old from Toronto might have been hoping for a quicker outcome in the finale.

But third seed Rodriguez, the 21-year-old from Bogotá who celebrated a career-high world No36 ranking at the beginning of this month, was also looking for his third Tour crown of the year after reaching his fifth final.

Three of the four games went to tie-breaks - with Razik ultimately prevailing 11-3, 10-11 (0-2), 11-10 (3-1), 11-10 (2-0) to win the $15,000 PSA Tour event trophy, and the 16th title of his career.

Final:
[1] Shahier Razik (CAN) bt [3] Miguel Angel Rodriguez (COL) 11-3, 10-11 (0-2), 11-10 (3-1), 11-10 (2-0) (107m)
