Teran Tests Kawy In Jamaica

21 Oct 2005

Unseeded Mexican Samantha Teran gave second seed Omneya Abdel Kawy a stern test in the opening round of the Women's Hedonism II Open in Negril before the Egyptian ultimately survived the 53-minute marathon.

Kawy, the 20-year-old world No9 from Cairo, beat the 24-year-old from Mexico City 9-6 10-8 10-9 and now faces sixth seed Pamela Nimmo. The Scot ended local interest in the event with a 9-4 9-0 9-3 defeat of Jamaica's Karen Anderson.

Fresh from the disappointment of losing her crown in last week's Dunlop British Open, Australia's Rachael Grinham brushed aside compatriot Melissa Martin 9-1 9-3 9-2 in just 21 minutes. The top seed now faces USA champion Latasha Khan, the seventh seed, who beat Canadian qualifier Runa Reta 9-6 9-2 10-9 in 41 minutes.
