Tegwen Denies Khan Double In Seattle

8 Sep 2005

The chance of US squash-playing sisters Latasha Khan and Shabana Khan competing alongside each other in the Women's PMI Seattle Open in their brother's club in Seattle have been dashed by Welsh champion Tegwen Malik in the qualifying finals for the Silver 25 WISPA World Tour event.

After staging a brave fight-back in the third game, elder sister Shabana went down 9-0 9-1 10-8 to Malik, who goes on to face third seed Nicol David, from Malaysia, in the first round.

There was another North American casualty in the qualifying finals when Canada's Melanie Jans Burke lost out to England's Alison Waters. The 9-2 9-4 9-3 win takes Waters through to a first round clash with England team-mate Vicky Botwright, the seventh seed.

Meanwhile Latasha Khan, the six-times US champion, leads domestic interest in the bottom half of the draw where she takes on second seed Vanessa Atkinson, the world champion from the Netherlands.

Fifth seed Natalie Grainger leads local interest in the top half of the draw. The 28-year-old world No5 from Washington DC faces English qualifier Laura-Jane Lengthorn.

Qualifying finals:
Alison Waters (ENG) bt Melanie Jans Burke (CAN) 9-2, 9-4, 9-3
Laura-Jane Lengthorn (ENG) bt Samantha Teran (MEX) 9-1, 5-9, 9-4, 9-3
Tegwen Malik (WAL) bt Shabana Khan (USA) 9-0, 9-1, 10-8
