Evan Williams Wins First Tour Title

4 May 2015

New Zealander Evan Williams marked his return to the PSA World Tour after a year-long injury by winning his first Tour title at the Squash Waikato Golden Jubilee Open on home soil.

The 25-year-old from Wellington, seeded four, achieved his breakthrough in stunning style at the PSA Challenger 5 event at Hamilton Squash & Tennis Club in Hamilton where he despatched both the top two seeds.

It was in the semi-finals that Williams beat second-seeded compatriot Kashif Shuja, a former world No.36, in straight games.

Fellow Kiwi Lance Beddoes, the top seed, awaited Williams in the final - but, despite a world rankings difference of more than 80 places, underdog Williams maintained his straight games run in the event to defeat the favourite 11-5, 11-9, 11-7 to claim his breakthrough title.

"This is my first PSA title out of eight finals and it means a lot to me," said Williams. "I was injured last year and missed out on a lot. I didn't know if I was ever going to play again - so to come back from injury and be able to win is very pleasing.

"It's great to play a tournament at home in NZ. Thank you to Squash Waikato and Hamilton Squash Club for giving us this opportunity. They've done a great job."

Beddoes added: "He played well and deserves the win. There was some good squash there. I had my chances in the second but he closed it out. It's good to be back in NZ and to play an event at home. I am looking forward to more of these in June."

Kashif Shuja, who is the PSA Oceania Representative, was also delighted with the success of the event: "PSA Squash is going through a high in Oceania. We have some amazing players, proud supporters and excellent promoters.

"This year is one of the best in my memory in terms of tournaments and players participating. We are very excited!"

Final:
