Meguid Wins All-Egyptian Final In Kuwait

8 May 2014

Egypt's world No30 Omar Abdel Meguid claimed his first PSA World Tour title of 2014 after beating compatriot Mohamed Abouelghar, ranked 19 places below, in the final of the Mohammed Yaquob Hajeyah PSA Challenger 15 Tournament in South Surrah, Kuwait.

Meguid, the event's number one seed, enjoyed a smooth journey to the final easily - despatching Kuwaiti hopes Ammar Altamimi and Yousif Nizar Saleh.

Qualifier Saleh pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the week beating number six seed Danish Atlas Khan from Pakistan 3/0 in the opening round.

The 47-minute 11-6, 5-11, 13-11, 11-3 final victory, his second win over Abouelghar in the last month, sees Meguid build on his runner-up finish at February's Oregon Open and lift his first tournament title on the PSA World Tour circuit since August 2013, when he was triumphant in the Pro Squash In Japan Challenger 10 event.

The 26-year-old will now travel to the prestigious Allam British Open in confident spirits as he aims to progress through the qualification draw and secure his berth in the main round of the PSA World Series tournament.

"I'm happy I won because it is always difficult playing a talented and excellent player like Mohamed," said Meguid following his victory.

"I enjoyed the tournament very much. I've been here a few times before and I'm just happy I managed to sneak a win in the end."
